A History of Lingerie! Girdle to Garter

Shape-wear has always been an important part of lingerie. What was once used to enforce “the perfect feminine silhouette” has evolved into playful, even provocative styles worn today at leisure. The girdle and the garter belt are two undergarment staples whose appearance and function has changed significantly to meet our modern day lingerie needs.

1930s

Moving away from the restrictive shape-wear of the decades prior, such as the metal boned corsets of the early 20th century,  the girdle first came about in the 1930s. Initially, it was a full body girdle with a bra, skirt, and garter straps all in one. Near the end of the 30s, it became more common to have a separate bra and girdle. The girdle was a stepping stone towards creating undergarments that were more comfortable for women, especially as this was around the time many women would be entering the workforce.

1940s

By this time, there were 3 typical styles of the girdle. A step down from the full body girdle was the full leg girdle, which covered from the waist to above the knee. This was followed by waist girdles, which look much more like a garter belt, and were intended to flatten the stomach as opposed to slim the entire figure. Lastly, as women began wearing pants, panty girdles came about which were essentially a shapely biker short with the  garter clips for stockings.

1950s + 1960s

The same styles of girdles from the 40s stuck around into the next two decades evolving only slighting in shape and material. Women were still “required” to wear stockings until the 1960s so the undergarments still served as a functional piece, as the stockings needed the garter clips to be held in place.

1960

1970s + 1980s

The 1970s moved away from the necessity of girdles and they were transformed into the garter belt. Now that stockings were made that either had a top or could stay up without clips, garters became a fashion statement instead of a functional garment. It was no longer out of place to see intricately adorned garter belts with lace and frills.

Modern Day

Finally, to the modern day garter! From the sexy strappy cage garters to the flirtatious lace garters, today’s realm of garter belts knows no bounds with a plethora of stunning embellishments and materials to choose from. Here are two of our very own garter favorite styles!

A History of Lingerie!

The wonderful world of lingerie has been around for thousands and thousands of years, but its purpose, style, and construction has evolved drastically over time.

The earlier forms of undergarments such as the loincloths of the 5th Century BC and the chemises’ of the Middle Ages served a purpose of practicality and modesty. Historically, you could determine the upper class from the lower class simply by what their underwear was made of. A silk loincloth was a distinction of high society!

The 16th and 17th Century introduced the corset into the closets of many women, though for some this trend was surely not willingly followed. Often causing a great deal of discomfort, the corset was intended to reduce the appearance of the waist and flatten breasts to create a modest, yet feminine silhouette. This lingerie staple eventually died out, though it has re-emerged in modern culture through burlesque performance and waist training, or cinching, shape-wear.

hol4

It wasn’t until the early 20th Century where the lingerie we know and love today first appeared, and the term became widely used. Underwear was no longer something to hide or conform the figure to particular beauty standards. It became much more decorative, and women had more of a choice as to what they could wear. Modesty was no longer part of the equation.

The technological advances of the fashion manufacturing industry are responsible for the extravagant embroidery, delicate trims, and luxurious yet comfortable fabrics now used to create lingerie. Though some of these embellishments to lingerie had been used prior to the 20th Century, they were most often done by hand and very time consuming.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to learn a little bit more about your underwear and how it’s made! Check back on our blog for the next weeks to hear more about the evolution of underwear, the garter belt, and the classic stocking!

Bridesmaids’ Tea Party Part Two: Booty, Bubbly, and Bobbypins

BTPmani

Anyone who knows me (or has read Part One) knows that I will colour coordinate until the cows come home, and then I will probably try to colour coordinate the cows too. Whether for a bachelorette party, shower gifts and games, or cute undies to wear on the big day, matching or themed underpants are undeniably fun (and well deserved confidence affirmation).

While we’re at it, let’s all have matching drinks and do each other’s hair (who knows, you might come up with the ideal style for the ceremony, or you can find inspiration here with Erin’s great bridal hair post).
See below for several themes and ideas which are compatible with any of the palettes from last week, or adapt them to match your own!

J’adore Paris!

BTPfrenchcutLace, champagne, and satin flowers. Luxury as only the French know how is the name of the day. Only the classiest will do, and our french cut lace undies fit the bill! (Matching bras are available which are a godsend if you’re wearing halter-style dresses!)

Pair with Flora satin bobbypins and our pink  Mayflowers, and check out my recipe for a sparkly-sweet (and budget friendly) take on the French 77, which is in turn a take on the French 75 (champagne, gin, lemon) with elderflower added.

Most recipes use Elderflower liqueur, but this can be prohibitively expensive in quantity. I made the miraculous discovery of elderflower cordial and pop near the mixes and fancy sodas at my grocery store, and have been making various adaptations since. The drinks in the picture below are as follows:

BTPfrench77
-1 shot Gin
-2 shots Sparkling Elderflower Drink (Bottle Green brand is nice)
-3/4 cup Sparkling White Wine or Rosé
-1/2 cup Yellow Lemonade or Grapefruit Juice (though Fentman’s Rose Lemonade is also an amazing choice for the pink option)
-Sugared Rim
-Suggestion: slice strawberries lengthwise for a heart shaped garnish.

Ooh La Lola

BTPlolaThe land of super-sexy bridal lingerie is full of padding, boning, underwire, and fabrics which may or may not breathe! Hardly our idea of wedded bliss. Thankfully, it doesn’t need to be this way! Our Lola line is made from bamboo, and features cheeky peekaboo sheer nylon panels on the bum (and the cups of the matching bras). Super soft, super breathable, and super seductive!
Pair with our Fand floral fascinators and a classic glass of wine (white or rosé) for a vintage-inspired temptress vibe.

Edwardian Teahouse

BTPbloomersBreak out the matching china, a lace edged tablecloth, and great great grandmother’s sun hat! Modernize the Downton Abbey era garden party with our cute and scandalous frilly-bum bloomer-style panties, flower bobby pins in “cherry”, and button hairpins in the “Jane Austen” colour way.

Tea is a great alcohol free option for an all ages party, though a fun idea for those who do wish to partake is to serve mix in teapots and spirits in creamers and sugar bowls.
Pink and white tea suggestions include white tea, peach tea, floral teas, raspberry tea, or strawberry tea.
BTPteacups

Sweet and Simple

BTPbikiniIf fuss and frills aren’t your style, stay comfy and cute in our bamboo blend bikini cut, here pictured in White and Cotton Candy. Organza floral bobbypins are an unobtrusive accent to a simple hairstyle, and are totally wearable after the event.

BTPjuiceHave a relaxing sunny day on the deck with lemonade, grapefruit juice, or sodas. Garnish with berries, cucumber, or citrus.

Think Outside the Box(ers)

BTPboxersWho says fun undies are only for the traditional fem-folk? If you have bridesmen, nonbinary members of the bridal party, or any women who would just feel more comfortable with it, we have two shades of pink boxer briefs. Frilly bums optional.
Our mini resin flower bobby pins come in multiple peachy tones, and their sturdy pin and light overall weight help them stay put in even very short hairstyles.

BTPboxerpins

BTPbeer
While we’re at it, why stick to standard wedding drinks? Fruity mixed cocktails and wine are all very well, but we are blessed to live in one of the best craft beer regions in the world. Here pictured are Tinwhistle Peach Cream Ale and Phillips Raspberry Wheat Ale. 33 Acres of Sunshine is also a less-fruity option for a pale-coloured beer for the purists.

Time for a Little Change!

This July will be our 4 year anniversary as part of the Fan Tan Alley family and we’re celebrating in a weird way… With a closing sale! The past four years in Fan Tan Alley have been wonderful! We have worked with amazing people, socialized with fantastic neighbors and made tons of new friends.

It seems like yesterday we were setting that little store up. It was our first experience having a second location and it was a great time! When I visited to bring new stock and check up I loved taking the ferry to work, for the most part, I called it my yacht to work. And it was a tough decision because we love that little location so much. The alley is a really special and unique place and it felt like such an honor to be a part of it but we have decided for the sake of doing bigger and more exciting things we needed to make the hard choice. Amongst our priorities are relaunching the online store which will feature nearly every product we carry in our stores, focusing on our Granville Island and Main Street locations to give our customers a more interactive and lively experience, and maybe to bring Devil May Wear to new cities and neighborhoods. We’re growing up and sometimes the growing pains are tough.

There’s going to be a lot of packing up and moving things back to Vancouver to do at the end of this journey and so we are offering a fantastic sale on EVERYTHING in the store!!!

Starting June 23rd – July 13: 20% off of all regular priced items and an additional 10% off of all marked down items. **This includes underwear, tights and jewelry, three things you’ll rarely see us put on sale if ever! During this time all sales are totally final, we will not be punching discounted underwear on punch cards, there will be no gift certificates for sale, and we won’t be transferring any stock from Vancouver to Victoria except for full price. If you have gift certificates or full underwear punch cards we will be redeeming them but don’t worry! We will be accepting them as always in our Vancouver locations without interruption. The sale is exclusive of all other sales and discounts. This sale is only available in store in Victoria and not in any of our other locations, online or by telephone. This sale is for the purpose of moving less stock from Victoria to Vancouver and there will be no exceptions to that. **

Then July 13th until our LAST DAY on July 23rd: 30% off of all regular priced items and an additional 20% off of all marked down items. **With all the above restrictions**

Don’t worry! We’re not going anywhere! We’re still making fabulous lingerie, adorable dresses, luxurious linens and vibrant hand knits as always and hopefully only improving our provisions with more focus!

If you have any questions about this sale or would like to inquire further, please get in touch with us by emailing devilmaywear@gmail.com.

It’s been a pleasure Victoria! Till we meet again!

Self love 101 – The Underwear Drawer

img_2308

I had a real revelation recently after a big night of doing laundry. I was looking at my massive underwear drawer when it occurred to me I wouldn’t want to be caught dead in most of it. I am proud to say I make underwear that lasts, and often thats an excessively long time. I still had underwear back from when I first started making underwear. Horses, fighter jets, bamboo with lace trim, silk screens by local artists, all sorts of awesome stuff I made over the years, some of which was rounding 15 years old and, although it was all still wearable I realize I make underwear for everyone else daily! I, of all people, deserve a drawer of brand new underwear! And that night I threw most of my underwear out. (I can’t help but imagine the look on the face of someone finding that bag in the garbage but let’s not go there.)

wwphoto.com
wwphoto.com

Of course it is important to invest and to be wise with your money but what are you hoarding you should probably replace? Where are you treating everyone else and sparing yourself? Do you love to cook for everyone else? I recently made 6 pies. I don’t eat pie. I gave them all away. Perhaps I should consider making myself a lovely meal next time. Do you give wicked manicures but somehow never have time for yourself? Do you love to paint but give all your best work away? It is so often we take ourselves for granted. It doesn’t have to cost a lot but it is important to take the time to communicate to ourselves that we matter too.  It’s time we start thinking, ‘me first’.

Wayne

Shortly after the underwear purge I was chatting with a few clients in one of the stores. One was looking at a sweater (a sweater on sale!! We never have sales!). She loved it. It fit her great and, according to the dialog between the two friends, she really needed a sweater. But she felt so guilty for spending money. It’s one thing to be thrifty but perhaps it’s not that we’re spending too much, maybe we’re not demanding enough! We don’t all have jobs with bosses we can walk up to and demand raises from tomorrow but I think it still comes back to the question: what are we doing for others we aren’t doing for us? And when will the guilt end?

If you need it, you need it! If you don’t, well maybe who cares! No guilt whatever you decide. Try everything on! Find the perfect one! The one that feels like it was made for you! And buy it in all it’s glory! Whatever it is don’t be compromising! It’s not about treating your self, rather it’s about investing in your self worth and it works in so many little ways. Start with 5 minutes to meditate in a quiet place in the morning. Take an evening to your self to watch the sun set. Or go buy the ridiculously expensive purse (I might add buy the one that lasts but that’s self loving yourself into the future so you don’t have to buy another expensive purse for years to come!). Or do like me and dump out that underwear drawer and ask yourself: in case of a wardrobe malfunction how would you feel in the stack you’re looking at? Whatever it means to you do it and quit guilting yourself about it.  Might as well start with self love.

Pebble Studio makes the best underwear documentaries

devil-may-wear-hd-0012small

Back in the spring time we caught the attention of local photographers and videographers Pebble Studio. Thank you to their exceptional skills and our wild models (well one of the models was a camera man with some unexpected enthusiasm) they made the most incredible short doc about how the magic happens. I have been holding onto this video to share at just the right time and I am thrilled to be able to do it now!

We filmed over two days. I wore a mic for the better part of two days. I was a little apprehensive about how silly I might get with a mic attached to my shirt but I can’t deny it’s authentic. Everyone had such great confidence and chemistry running around in underwear hamming it up on camera. You’ve already seen the stills but now you can check it out from behind the scenes!

Wayne Wiens : April Fools Erotic Art

Our Dear Friend Wayne Wiens has done it again. Only Wayne could take a beautiful woman and some amazing hand made underwear from Devil May Wear and make photos this spectacular!

“I have always had an interest in taking photos of the natural world and of people. I find them both beautiful. My photography is focused on the rituals of human activity and on the rhythms of nature.” (Wayne Wiens)

“In that time (50 years), I have learned that good photography requires the right light and a good eye. Luck is frequently a factor as well. But more important than all is one’s interaction with the subject.” (Wayne Wiens)

Check out his amazing photographic work in Fan Tan Alley this month for Erotic Art Walks until April 3oth.
